Moving Day Checklist

 

Address Change
▪ Give forwarding address to Post Office 4 to 6 weeks before moving
▪ Charge accounts, bank, credit cards
▪ Subscriptions: Notice requires 6 to 8 weeks
▪ Inform friends and relatives

 

Utility Companies (Click HERE for phone numbers)
▪ Gas, light, water, telephone, fuel, garbage
▪ Transfer services at current home to new occupant & start service at new home
▪ Get refunds on any deposits made
▪ Return cable boxes

 

Delivery Service
Laundry, newspaper, change over of service

 

Medical, Dental, Prescription Histories
Ask Doctor and Dentist for referrals, transfer needed prescriptions, eyeglasses. X-rays. Obtain birth records, medical records, etc.

 

Pets
Ask about regulations for licenses, vaccinations, tags, etc.

 

Don’t Forget to:
▪ Empty freezer, plan use of foods
▪ Defrost freezer and clean refrigerator. Place charcoal to dispel odors.
▪ Have appliances serviced for moving
▪ Clean rugs or clothing before moving, have them wrapped.
▪ Check with your Moving Counselor, insurance coverage, packing and unpacking labor, arrival day, various shipping papers, method and time of expected payment.

Pack an "Open Me First" Box

Put your necessities in here: one set of bed linens, coffee pot w/ a bag of ground coffee beans, sugar & dehydrated cream, personal hygiene items, soap, 1 roll of toilet paper, a few day's worth of pet food,snacks, etc. Make sure you label this box so you will be able to easily find it... or, take this box with youin your car.

 

On Moving day:
▪ Carry enough cash or traveler’s check to cover cost of moving services and expenses until you make banking connections in new city
▪ Carry jewelry and documents yourself, or us registered mail
▪ Plan for transporting of pets; they are poor traveling companions if unhappy
▪ Let close friends or relatives know route and schedule you will travel including overnight stops, use them as message headquarters
▪ Double check closets, drawers, shelves to be sure they are empty
▪ Leave old keys, garage door openers, broiler pans, landscape / house plans and instruction manuals needed by new owner at the house

 

At your New Address:
▪ Obtain certified checks or cashier’s check necessary for closing Real Estate Transaction (check escrow/title company for details)
▪ Check on service of telephone, gas, electricity, water and garbage
▪ Check pilot light or stove, for water heater and furnace
▪ Ask mailman for mail he may be holding for your arrival
▪ Have new address recorded on driver’s license
▪ Visit city office and register for voting
▪ Register car within 5 days after arrival in state or a penalty may have to be paid when getting new license plates
▪ Obtain inspection sticker and transfer motor club membership
▪ Apply for state driver’s license
▪ Register family in your new place of worship
▪ Register children in school
▪ Arrange for medical services; Doctor, Dentist, Veterinarian, etc...
